This stunning Lenox Belleek set of demitasse cups, saucers and plates is a beige color with silver overlay. Each piece is numbered and bears the Lenox Belleek signature on the bottom. This Art Nouveau set has a history for those who may not know. Irish Belleek factory workers traveled to America in the 19th Century for employment during Europe's turmoil, helping to create an American version of Ireland's prize porcelain china. By the late 1800s, American Belleek was going strong. In 1893, the Ceramic Art Company displayed, in the World's Colombian Exposition in Chicago, a Belleek vase resembling porcelain bisque. It was a hit and soon CAC started selling china blanks to amateur artists. Many of these amateur artists specialized in silver overlay. In 1894, Lenox bought CAC and continued manufacturing Lenox Belleek. The unique aspect is how light weight Belleek has always been. This three piece place setting (cup, saucer and plate) is no exception. The three pieces weigh less than one pound. We spoke with Lenox and estimate this pattern was made before the turn of the century. 1800s-1900s. The set is a complete luncheon service for six and one cup has been repaired ( see photos ). Other than that, it is in excellent condition and quite rare. The luncheon plate is 7 1/2" in diameter. The saucer is 4 1/2" in diameter and the cup is 2 3/8" high and 2 2/8" in diameter at the opening. Collectors may want to proceed without hesitation.
