THIS FINE AND RARE 9 SIDED SPYGLASS WAS MADE BY THE PROLIFIC MAKER PETER DOLLOND, SON OF JOHN DOLLOND. BOTH WORKED IN 1752 AT THE GOLDEN SPECTACLES AND SEA QUADRANT, EXETER CHANGE, STRAND. JOHN DOLLOND WAS APPOINTED ROYAL OPTICIAN IN 1761 AND DIED THE SAME YEAR. PETER MOVED TO 59 ST. PAUL CHURCHYARD, AND IN 1791 TO 35 HAYMARKET. PETER IS CREDITED WITH INVENTING THE BACKSIGHT DEVICE FOR THE HADLEY QUADRANT. THIS FINE SCOPE MEASURES 26" CLOSED AND 31 1/2" OPENED. tHE FRONT LENS COVER IS MARKED "DOLLOND/LONDON" THE OPTICS PRODUCE CLEAR, ERECT IMAGES. A FINE AND RARE EARLY EXAMPLE, FROM A MASTER MAKER, AND HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER.
