(#2) This is a rare delicately painted Chinese export plate rendered against the brilliant white porcelain in shades of black and grey, the technique introduced during the Yongzheng period, variously referred to as en grisaille, encre de chine, and sepia. The plate is highlighted with gilt and dates to around 1740. Decorated with a jardinière of blossoming peony plant on a table, another filled with fruit (pomegranate, peach and Buddha's Hand citron) collectively known as the "Three Abundances", and additionally a vase containing a magnolia branch and lingzhi fungus. Scattered beneath this is a beribboned lotus plant with root and pod and several fruits. Representative of the "Hundred Antiques" motif, these items impart a wish for long life and prosperity with some flowers of the four seasons and symbols of longevity including the lingzhi--the fungus of immortality--and the peach. Positioned equidistantly on the wide rim are scrolling sprigs of fruiting grape vines enclosed by a spear-head gilt and black border. The reverse undecorated. It measures 23cm across (9 inches) and is in very good condition with just 2 small chips to the rear rim. Please see our matching plate and you can have a pair!
