I am helping my Aunt dispose of some of my late Uncle's effects (she is 78 and not computer-literate) . He was a Commissioning Engineer, working worldwide from the 1960s, including Japan, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, China, Iran, Poland & India (just to mention a few of the places). This is a really rare and unusual item; in June of 1961 my uncle was on the inaugural flight by Japan Airlines DC-8C International Jet Courier, called the DC-8C Jet Polar Service from Europe to Tokyo (we assume it was London to Tokyo, although the certificate says Europe). He was presented with this book, which I think rather resembles a posh scrapbook, but JAL called it a "Book of Memories", presumably to scribble on or write in, "in-flight"! The book is covered with a fabric of the same pattern as the airline seats in First Class (looking at the brochure), and I "think" it is probably silk.Together with this book is a small certificate/parchment stating that it was presented on the occasion of the inaugural flight (Europe to Tokyo) June 1961, and also a fabulous glossy brochure.This brochure is probably more interesting than the book itself, and I have scanned most of it, please look at all of the pictures. It is a totally fascinating insight to the glamorous new world of airline travel in the 1960's. The brochure suggests that only the First Class pasengers read more
