Remember 9-11-01. God Bless and Keep America Safe! RARE 19TH C WM STRACHAN LIQUOR ADVERTISING JUG TORONTO #9865 5 Day Auction--This is a fine looking 19th century advertising stoneware jar or jug that just may have a very interesting history. This jar reads William Strachan, Importer of Wines & Liquors, 163 King St East, Toronto CW. The heading is all in cobalt blue with slight traces of cobalt drip glaze. This advertising jar measures 9 1/2" tall x 6 1/2" in diameter at the widest. It has a dark brown glaze inside. The jug has a rather interesting top lip or spout. T is one chip on the almost back side of the spout. The rest is free of chips and cracks. T are four lighter spots at the bottom. Since these spots are equidistantly positioned, that leads us to believe that this was the normal procedure in firing these jugs or jars. Other than the chip, this piece is in excellent condition and looks great. In searching for this William Strachan, we came up with next to nothing. However, in records dating back to 1857, the name of Strachan (pronounced Strawn) came up as one of Toronto's leading families and a William Strachan was an alderman in an Orange Lodge.
