Exceptionnal antique 19th century French majolica plate. It displays a raised oriental scene composed by two men in front of a Buddhist temple. The priest (the man with the umbrella) is wearing a deep turquoise and pale blue religious vestment with a bird on his chest. We can see his chignon under the umbrella. The other man is just wearing a tunica and pants. He seems less important. The background scene is fabulous. It depicts different flowers in their wild leaves, palm trees (or papyrus), a cedar and grass. The grass continue to grow on the rim of the plate. All the plants are in relief. The garden is gorgeous, the cedar is magnificent. This rim is composed by many raised fish scales, painted in olive and white. The back is signed S and numbered 1209. The plate is in perfect condition. No chips, no cracks, no discoloration. A small painting defect between the cedar and the priest's face. This plate must belong to the japonese period of the aesthetic movement in France. A true rarity. It measures 8 3/8 in diameter. Shipping cost from France to the US : $16.00. Please paypal.
