An impressively large toleware hot water can, measuring 11 1/2" high (17" including the handle) and 10" across the base. I believe it is French or, at any rate, Continental and was manufactured sometime around the 1870s to 1890s. Hot water cans, as opposed to watering cans, were used in well-to-do households before the advent of hot running water from a tap. A maid would fill the can with boiling water in the kitchen and carry it to an upstairs tub so that one of the household could bathe. Imagine the number of trips (or maids and cans) it would take to get a decent amount of water! The bend in the spout would prevent spillage en route while the lid would keep the water hot and prevent the maid's hand from being scalded by the steam. It is decorated with two pretty girls, a different one on front and back, each framed by a gold-painted cartouche on a pink band. All of this decoration shows up nicely against the cream background. The pink and gold paints were applied by hand with the use of a stencil. The girls' portraits are actually a sort of decal, like a transfer used on china, that have been permanantly fused to the paint. T are some barely visible stenciled letters on the bottom of the can. I am certain that it indicates the name and possibly the address of the company that made it. Unfortunately, due to the discoloration and bit of rust, I simply cannot make out enough of the letters to form any firm conclusions. As far as condition goes, I can guarantee that all of the paint is original, that the handle moves easily in its hinges and that t are no dings or dents in the metal. As you can see from the photos, t is obviously some paint loss. T is some minor rust on the bottom, both inside and out, but it is still completely intact, with no holes through. Considering its age and the fact that it probably saw a lot of use in its time, it seems to me to be in rather good shape. As a genuinely antique piece of toleware and an artifact of a different way of life, perhaps it is deserving of a place in your collection. After an extended hiatus, thegildedmermaid is back and better than ever.
