The revenue service was established in 1799 with a distinctive ensign and pendant. The flag consisted of sixteen red and white vertical stripes to distinguish it the national flag and a union or canton bearing the arms of the United States in dark blue on a white field. in 1871 the union was altered slightly in that the 13 stars were placed in an arch above the eagleThis rare example dates circa 1885. It is machine sewn with straight stitching on wool bunting and cotton stars and eagle. It measures 59 x 80 inches. The blue has faded to a blue-gray which is a common occurrence in these flags of the period. The last two stripes are missing possible due to fraying away from use. Revenue Service flags from the nineteenth century rarely come on the market. This is the earliest example we have come across.
