ANTIQUE ATA (YOMUD-GROUP) TURKMEN IGSALIK TENT BAG, West Turkestan, Khiva area, 19th century. Exact size: 11" x 22" (28 x 56 cm). A very rare weaving created by the Ata, an Arab tribe Turkomanised in the early 19th century, who lived in close proximity to the Yomud Turkmen as an "avliad", or "under the protection of". Unlike the majority of Yomud and Yomud-group weavings, this specimen has an asymmetrical knot structure on goat hair warps and red-dyed wool or camel-hair wefting. The color palette, too, is unusual and the use of teal blue/greens, salmon reds, and old gold mimics the hue of the 18th/19th century Ata chuval published by Siawosch Azadi. Refer to: "Turkoman Carpets and the Ethnographic Significance of their Ornaments", translated by Robert Pinner, 1975, The Crosby Press, plate # 33. Although in the literature tent bags shaped like this present specimen were called "spindle bags", they actually were used to store any smaller items inside the yurt structure. The present example is larger in format than most. The overall condition of the bag is excellent except for the missing pile at the top center, from repeated entry into the bag to reach its contents. For the astute and advanced Turkoman collector, this could be a real "find" for one's holdings. No other published Igsalik tent bag with an asymmetrical knot structure is known in the literature on antique Turkoman weavings.
