This is a very rare form of Amputation kit that is being sold with a LOW starting price and NO RESERVE !! The kit is in a beautiful mahogany box with brass banding and blank brass name plate. Lovely blue velvet interior with divider (missing a very small area of velvet and somewhat flimsy). The lock plate cover is missing. The set is by G Tiemann (New York). As you can see the handles are made of ivry. This is a compact kit considering that it is in 4 layers. It is about 10.5X6X3 inches. Very compact and the capital amputation saw is tiny, only 9.5 inches long with a beautiful patterned ivoy handle. I have only seen 3 tiny tiemann sets like this in 30 years of collecting. The lowest layer has the small amputation saw, bone snips, two trocars and cannulae, and the trephine head. These are all original. T is a small field tourniquet that is very compact and I am not sure if it is original. It is a little small for the space but fits nicely in the set. The next level up has 9 minor scalpels, hooks etc by Tiemann and original. One is unmarked and may not be original. Two are missing and easily replaced. That layer also has an original tiemann bullet forceps with tiny spikes in the grips to hold onto the bullet. T is a tissue forceps which fits very nicely but may not be original. This layer also has the ivoory trephine head. Missing from this level is probably what was the common handle for the screw on amputation knife in another level. I thin some bone wax is missing from this level also. T are two levels in the lid just as the two in the bottom that I just described. The "top" layer in the lid has an original ivory handled tiemann Hey saw for trephination (neurosurgery). T is also a scissors, long grasper, and three other ivoory instruments for passing suture and cutting in small areas. I believe t was once a bone brush on this level, as well as a few other instruments that are no longer present. The final layer has 2 silver urinary catheters and a knife blade that has a screw end for the afformentioned handle that is not in the set. T is room for an elevator, two more knives, and another tiny instrument. Finaly in this layer is a strange long instrument with very sharp tip. Not sure of its use, but it is original. Clearly this set is not complete, but it does have at least 24 original pieces, is in 4 layers, great box, and Civil War era. Not to mention the rare handle material. This set would be a fine addition to a surgical set collection, medical display, or in Civil War reenactment. I would not recommend it, but the pieces could be taken out and sold individually for a handsome sum. These kinds of Hey saws sell for $200 and up and the amputation saw is worth multiples of that. I am going to have a real auction , starting the bidding at just $1500 with No Reserve! Two similar ivoryy sets have sold at Garth's and Skinner recently in the $7500 range .I am only selling this set as it is a duplicate in my collection. I continue to look for fine cased surgical sets, bloodletting items (including cupping sets, leech jars, lancet cases), and antique art related to medicine and medical history (paintings, sculpture, stained glass, etc). Please ask any questions and I will reply promptly. Happy to send more photos also. Payment is by Check and must clear before the set is sent. Happy to ship to Europe. Shipping is $35 plus insurance in the USA, actual cost elsew (must be insured). PA residents must add 6% sales tax.Good luck with your bidding!!! Please see my website
