BLUE LAW SURVIVAL BENIFIT (sic) [AT THE CHEETAH CLUB] POSTER . On May 17, 18, and 19 of 1968 , the Cheetah Club , at 1 Navy Street, Venice Beach, California, held a concert for the benefit of the Blue Law Night Club in Torrance, California, which was under intense pressure from the local police to close its doors. The list of bands scheduled to "star" at this benefit concert is extraordinary: Strawberry Alarm Clock, Quicksilver Messenger Service, P G & E, Sweetwater, Love Exchange, Hour Glass (Duane and Greg Allman were members), Marvellous To Witness, Things To Come, Albert King. In addition to the above bands the following bands were listed as "attractive to" the event: Notional Whimseys, Red Beans and Rice, Quodlibetical Humans, Spirit, Genesis ( surely one of Genesis ' first appearances on a poster in the U.S., as they had only recently released their first single and the release of their first album was still months away ), Touch, Mothers of Invention, H.P. Lovecraft, Triangle, East Side Kids, Copper Leaf, and Fair Befall. Quoting the text of the poster: "ATTN: THE ACTS WILL PERFORM ON THE NIGHT/ ACCORDING TO THEIR AVAILABILITY." Beyond the stellar list of bands, the most interesting thing about this poster is that the venue is not specifically listed anyw on the poster itself . Research proves that the venue was the Cheetah Club , for the only place that the Quicksilver Messenger Service played on the dates May 17, 18, 19, 1968 (according to Marc Skobac's Quicksilver Concert Timeline ), was at the Cheetah Club in Los Angeles . This forces one to consider that this poster was printed in an extremely small print run ; for, as the venue is not listed, this advertisement could only have been posted in the Cheetah Club proper, or in the local vicinity of the club. The Cheetah Club was located on the Pacific Ocean Park Pier , and so it is possible that some of these bands played outdoors on the pier, while others were presented inside the over-2000 capacity nightclub. The Cheetah had been converted from the old Aragon Ballroom in 1966 by Bob Gibson, who had represented such bands as The Doors, The Mamas and the Papas, and The Byrds . The Blue Law Nightclub at 19840 S. Hamilton, in Torrance, California had been under intense pressure from the police to close its doors, and this benefit was held to raise money to keep it open. Unfortunately, the benefit did not forestall the Blue Law's demise for long. By August of 1968, the Blue Law had closed its doors and had been reopened as the Bank . As for the Cheetah , itself . . . by most accounts, it soon followed the fate of the Blue Law and closed its own doors later in the same year. It then burned down in a midnight fire that destroyed the P.O.P. pier on May 27, 1970. This poster was designed by Kittyhawk Graphics (a company owned by Dean Torrance , formerly of Jan and Dean ), and has red and brown ink on white (or vellum paper) stock; it measures approximately 22 1/2 x 16 1/2 inches. The condition, as you can see from the accompanying photos, leaves something to be desired; but I believe this to be one of the RAREST posters in this collection. It may not come up at auction again for many years. This one of an extensive collection of Sixties Rock Posters I shall be listing in the next few weeks on E-BAY. A few are fairly common; some are quite scarce, and more than a few are genuinely RARE.
