Very rare canning jar from Martha's Vinyard. The front reads A. STONE & Co.; second line reads PHILAND'A. The A following PHILAND is raised and underscored. The lid reads A STONE & Co, PHILADA with the last A raised & underscored. Internal threads on jar neck for threaded glass stopper. Stopper has glass bosses with a hollow center. Top of stopper has the two glass bosses so a wrench could be used to aid in opening the jar. This bottle is in excellent condition for its age. It is a pint size measuring 6 1/4" tall x 3 1/2" in diameter. The base has what is called a "kick-up". The jar is aqua in color. According to The Collector's Guide to Old FRUIT JARS, RED BOOK 8 by Douglas M. Leybourne, Jr., this canning jar is valued at $1,000 and up. My Collector's Guide is a 1997 edition so I would believe the value is higher in a more current issue. What a great Christmas gift this would be to a canning jar collector! Please e-mail me with any questions. Thanks for looking! ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:Thank goodness for eBay's educated audience. I have been informed that this jar should be described as a "lugged mouth" closure rather than a screw in and I appreciate the information. This jar was found in an artist's studio in Menemsha, a fishing village in Martha's Vinyard.Due to the number of questions that have been asked regarding this jar, I read more
