This captivating New London County,Ct. schoolgirl sampler (15x18) has so many exceptional attributes, but the stunning "Octopus" basket in the lower panel steals the show with its unusual, dazzling visual form! The basket itself is a unique design,as the tentacle-like branches undulate in horizontal splendor across the entire width of the sampler.....highlighted by solidly stitched 2-tone floral bursts. This outstretched basket format is reminiscent of evolving 18thC New London County examples (see Betty Ring's Girlhood Embroidery Vol I,page 200);a memorable bit of New England schoolgirl artistry. Another one of a kind schoolgirl element includes an arcaded horizontal band just below the baby blue silk alphabet. This rare band is highlighted by the rare inclusion of the entire alphabet worked in tandem with it,done in diminutively stitched lettering(see photos 3&4)! In addition,t are other striking horizontal bands, the original frame with a huge bubble in the wavy glass, and an inscription which reads;"Susan S. Thompson's Sampler Wrought in the Twelveth year of her age AD 1825". The Conn. sampler is in extremely fine overall condition, and though it has a traditional New England aura, its singular virtues put it into an extraordinary class that assures it will be a conversation piece. Conserved on acid free board in its original frame, read more
