is a blue American Historical Staffordshire Toddy Plate that doesn't come down the pike very often! It is a view of Mendenhall Ferry (near Philadelphia) from Joseph Stubbs' Spread Eagle Border Series. The 5 ½" diameter plate shows a very bucolic scene along the Schuylkill River (not far from the center of Philadelphia) with cows resting in the foreground. The border includes 3 eagles with the wings outspread and assorted flowers. The plate is marked with a blue cartouche: Mendenhall Ferry. (Toddy plates are slightly larger than cup plates, ranging from about 4 1/2" to 5 1/2" in diameter. They are rare forms in American Historical transferware.)
In a perfect world, something this unusual would be perfect, but in fact, neither this world nor this plate meet that criterion. It displays beautifully, with rich, blue color and a very crisp transfer. Unfortunately, the plate has a 2" line (thin and tight) that extends in from the border at about 9 o'clock; on the front side, t are a couple of small pottery flicks associated with this line. Also, t are several very tiny under edge flicks on the underside of the plate: these are small and shallow and not visible from the transfer side. Stubbs' Spread Eagle Border series, which dates c. 1825-1830, is one of the more popular of the American Historical Staffordshire patterns. It includes a large number of different transfers, and the eagles in the border make a statement. This view, which is usually found on platters, is included in Jeffrey Snyder's book Historical Staffordshire: American Patriots and Views (p. 101), and is item #S107 in Sam Laidacker's book Anglo American China (Vol. 1, p. 44). The Armans include it as plate #327 on p. 122 of their Historical Staffordshire: An Illustrated Check List. And you aren't the only one who wishes this plate were perfect. Buyer prepays, plus postage.
