RARE AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON ~ COLUMBIAN STAR John W RidgwayStaffordshire England 1840 This is a very rare, early American historical Staffordshire transferware teaset in the Columbian Star pattern. The set is dated October 28, 1840. It is transfer printed in a blue with a pearlware glaze. This six-sided hexagonal ironstone set is comprised of a teapot, sugar pot and cream pitcher. The teapot stands 7 ½ inches tall and measures 10 ½ inches from handle to spout. The sugar stands 6 ½ inches tall and measures 7 inches across. The creamer stands 5 ½ inches tall and measures 6 inches tall. The set came from the family estate of a West Virginia Judge. The main scene on the teaset is two men standing on the land surrounding a log cabin. It has a star-spangled border with wreath of laurel leaves. The set was made in England for export to the United States, to celebrate t he successful 1840 presidential campaign of William Henry Harrison. Harrison 's compaign was the first modern "political" campaign. Harrison was a college graduate from a comfortable family background, but he later lived in Ohio , which was frontier territory at that time. He broke with tradition and campaigned actively for president on the Whig ticket. The Whigs used the log cabin as the symbol of his campaign, exploiting his log cabin years and his history of fighting Indians at the battle of Tippecanoe to sell him to the voters as a rugged frontier hero and a man of the people. This pattern was made by John W Ridgway in Staffordshire England in 1840. The pattern is identified on page 37 of PRESIDENTIAL AND CAMPAIGN MEMORABILIA , by Stan Gores, published in 1982 (now out of print). The pieces bear an elaborate maker's mark with the Columbian Star pattern name, and the date October 28, 1840, the date of the election. T is also an impressed "John Ridgway" mark on each base. The set is in great condition with no chips, cracks, stains or repairs. The sugar lid has a steam hole in it, indicating that it was originally made for a teapot, but the fit is fine and it is a perfect match to the sugar. T is also an underglaze rim chip on the underside of one of the handles of the sugar, original to the making. A couple of insignificant glaze flakes, consistent with age. Its very rare to find the matching piece all at once, and especially in such fine condition as this! As prize for any collector of presidential commemoratives or for a collector of American historial transfer printed ceramics. We have also listed other early transferware teasets this week, fresh from our recent buying trip. We are always happy to combine postage on multiple purchases.
