Rare Antique 1800s Copper Medal: Saint Martin of Tours ~ Patron of Equestrians and Soldiers ~ This big splendid medal of St. Martin of Tours is solid copper and measures 1-1/8" (28 mm) long. It was made in France in the 1800s. Fine original patina enhances the depictions of Martin aiding a beggar and leading a prayer. Martin of Tours (316-397 CE), son of a pagan Roman military officer, joined the Roman imperial army himself at 15, discovered Christianity and was baptized at 18. Once, while on horseback in Amiens, France, he met a beggar. As he had no money to give, he cut his officer's cloak in half and gave it to the beggar. Later he had a vision of Christ wearing the cloak. Martin was robbed on a trip to visit his parents in Lombardy, but managed to convert one of the thieves. So intense was Martin's faith that he became the spiritual student of Saint Hilary at Poitiers. Martin became a hermit for a decade in the Ligugé area. His reputation for holiness attracted other monks, and they formed what would become the Benedictine abbey of Ligugé. When the bishop of Tours died in 371, Martin declined to accept the position. In 372 he was tricked into it, however, when a wealthy citizen requested that Martin visit his ailing wife. When Martin arrived in Tours, he was declared bishop by popular acclamation. He moved to a hermit's cell, was joined t by other monks, and they formed a new house, Marmoutier. Saint Martin of Tours is the patron of equestrians and soldiers.
