RARE Antique 1864 L PRANG American Card Album
PLEASE SEE ALL OF THE PHOTOS THAT APPEAR BELOW THE DESCRIPTION
This is a fantastic, and I would think, very rare album containing 19th century collectible cards by Louis Prang. The album has a title page that reads "American Card Album - Manufactured by L. Prang & Co. Boston, Mass. Patented April 5th, 1864". Louis Prang was born in Breslau and apprenticed to his father, who was a textile printer. Immigrating to America in 1850, he worked as a printmaker until opening his company in 1860. In 1864, he visited Europe to learn the latest German lithography techniques and returned to America to begin production of reproductions of artwork as well as these collectible cards, meant to be collected in albums or scrapbooks. It's interesting to note that in 1873, he began to export Christmas Cards to England and then introduced them to the American market - because of this, he is known as the father of the American Christmas Card.

In fact, all of the cards are beautiful, featuring wonderful details and colors - the oranges and blues are especially striking. These were printed using the chromolithographic process, w each color is separately printed with its own plate - color printing today employs a 4 color process, which uses combinations of dots of the four primary colors in order to create the illusion of colors. It is economical, but you cannot achieve the intensity of color that chromolithography delivers.
The album contains the following series of cards:
May Wildflowers:12 cards
June Wildflowers: 12 cards
July Wildflowers" 12 cards
September Wildflowers: 12 cards
