Exceptional Rare 1929 Mahogany Executive Leopold Desk

Unique Rare Design, Mahogany Inlaid Band Top

For your consideration an outstanding 1929 Mahogany Executive Desk made by the Leopold Desk Company. This desk has had only one owner in the last 40 years.

The desk was featured on the cover of the 1929 "Proceedings of the Leopard Dealers' Convention" (see photo). The University Of Iowa have some Leopold catalogs online but none from this time period.

Leopold Desk Company was world renown for the high quality of their desks. All desks were hand made by skilled craftsmen. Native oaks and maples were used, mahogany and other woods were imported, but all the wood was sent to New York to be processed (special drying process) and then shipped back. Construction costs were expensive relative to other desk manufacturers at this time.

Having viewed many of the catalogs I have discovered that this desk is much more ornate than the other desks Leopold had been producing through 1930. If you read the details of the 1929 Convention Proceedings, this period was a turning point in the company's' product line since buyers were looking for more ornate desks and suites. Prior to the 1920s companies made purchases for office furniture based on function, utility, and quality. The 1920s were a successful period for many businesses. Companies "flush" with money, a quoted from Carl Leopold, were now looking for more modern and ornate selections of office desks and "suites"

It is ironic however that 2 weeks after the dealers' convention, the Stock Market Crash of 1929 occurred. What this meant to all the companies of the world is obvious. Buying office furniture was the last of their worries. What this meant to Leopold Desk Company and its product line I am not certain. This desk may be one of a kind. I have yet to find a desk as ornate and beautiful that was produced by Leopold.

Wood: Mahogany

8 deep drawers: 4 right, 3 left, 1 center. Center drawer has lock but no key. Drawers on right and left lock when center drawer is fully closed. Unique locking mechanism that still works. Slide out boards on each ide.

Ball Feet. Engraved ornate features.

Dimensions: 72" width, 40" depth, 31" height

The desk is in magnificent condition for its age. The only restoration needed is limited to 2 areas. The inlaid black band along the desktop has chipped and cracked in places(see photo). Also the wood veneer on a single drawer is chipped and warping. Structural the drawer is fine, it is the veneer wood that needs repair. The drawer can be removed and sent for restoration without sending the whole desk. The desk seperates into 4 pieces- left & right sides, center, and top(very heavy).

The desk is located just outside Chicago in Melrose Park, IL. My company is closing after 50 years in business. I hate to part with this treasure but I have no place to keep it.

Desk must be picked up immediately following end of auction. I accept PayPal or cash on pickup. If you have any questions please contact me.
