Super rare portrait tile depicting Henry Morton Stanley (1841 - 1904) the British journalist and explorer famous for his exploration of Africa and his search for David Livingstone. . . "Stanley participated reluctantly in the American Civil War first joining the Confederate Army participating in the Battle of Shiloh in 1862. After being taken prisoner he promptly deserted and joined the Union. He served in the Navy but eventually deserted again.Following the Civil War, Stanley began a career as a journalist. Aspart of this new career, Stanley organized an expedition to the Ottoman Empire that ended catastrophically when Stanley was imprisoned. He eventually talked his way out of jail, and even received restitution for damaged expedition equipment. This early expedition may have formed the foundation for his eventual exploration of the Congo region of Africa." (Wikipedia.)Really wonderful and very rare, original antique 6" x 6" American portrait tile. The back is unmarked, but the tile is American, c. 1870 - 1904. "HM Stanley" is carved to the left of the portrait and "Africa" to the right in intaglio. It is somewhat difficult to make out in the photos. The tile is in a wonderful brownish-amber very glossy glaze (making it difficult to photograph). T is a bit of edge irregularity on the left edge of the
