Rare Victorian Gutta Percha Floral (Rose?) Mourning Brooch c. 1860. Mourning pins and brooches were worn during the Victorian era during times of sorrow and loss. Many black materials were used during periods of mourning, such as Whitby Jet, Bog Oak. Dyed Horn and Vulcanite. Gutta Percha is very soft and often easily damaged. It is actually a hard rubber-like material made from the sap of Malayan trees. It gives off a rubber smell when rubbed and is slightly salty if put to the lips. Mourning jewelry substances are often hard to identify. I guarantee this one to be authentic Gutta Percha. It is in perfect condition with original Victorian tube hinge and c-clasp. I do notice a small (very small) circular area w the piece was tested at one time. Piece is being offered at NO RESERVE !
