Tiny little serrated green botehs of Northwest Persian type arranged in dynamic staggered rows on a deep tan ground make up the field of this charming and unusual Bezalel. A soft purple border outlined in magenta spews pomegranates. Within it t are hearts in red and green, stars of David in the corners, menorahs in the middle of the sides, and the maker's signature in Hebrew at the bottom. It is impressive how much decorative effect the weaver has achieved using such a limited range of motifs. But the soft coloration of the piece is remarkably pleasing and effective despite the limited range of tones. Bezalel carpets are particularly interesting for their unique historical context. They were produced in the earlier twentieth century as part of a new art school for Jewish immigrants in Jerusalem within what was then British-ruled Palestine.
