This Authentic Antique Settee is absolutely stunning and very difficult to find elsew on the resale market. I was surprised how difficult it was for me to find a comparable. In fact, I never actually did ! More specifically, I was able to find other settees with scrolled arms, but none with these extraordinarily high swan neck arms . I was able to find sofas, benches, love seats, and chaise seating with similar feet and a couple of benches with high scrolled arms, but they did not have a high back like the present example. Furniture with similar characteristics were listed elsew as Empire, French Empire, Classical, Federal, Victorian, and even Rococo Revival. Interestingly, some of the benches with tall sides were referred to as wedding love seats, but again none of them had backs. This item was consigned to me by a private party. Unfortunately, they do not have any information regarding the provenance. They bought this piece at an antique store approximately eight years ago and have decided that it does not fit into their casual home decor. I took a lot of pictures of this piece to make sure that interested buyers could see all of the intricate carved details. The entire sweeping crest rail, scrolled arms, feet and remaining woodwork are carved with decorative classic motifs such as acanthus leaves and rosettes . More specifically, the center, front of the scrolled arms are each accented by a very large rosette carving (i.e., refer to the photos at the point w the scroll loops and ends on the outer arms). If you look below the cushioned seat, you can see that t is a recessed panel running across that attaches to each of the spectacular carved feet. I have seen this particular style of outward-turned paw or claw feet referred to as Cornucopia, Cornucopia & Foliated Claw, simply Claw, or Griffin. The upholstery is a very pale shade of gray with a very subtle, classical cartouche style design (i.e., please refer to photos) in ivory white stitching throughout. The two custom side roll pillows are, of course, also included. The upholstery is in very good condition with no rips or tears, but t is a light stain on one of the arms (i.e., refer to the very last photograph). Measurements The piece measures approximately 46" tall at its highest point, 59" wide at its widest point, and has a depth of 24" (i.e., measuring from front to back). Wow, the arms are just about 4 feet tall! As you can see, the back actually sweeps down in the middle. Such an interesting piece!! Condition The piece is in excellent condition for its age with no significant damage. T are two minor imperfections in the upholstery and one minor issue with the frame that I discuss below. Overall, you will find that this piece is truly amazing and has been cared for over the years. This piece is definitely ready for resale in any fine antique store or ready for display as part of your home decor. Upholstery : T are NO tears in the upholstery and this piece is certainly ready to display in your home. T is some extremely minor fraying around a couple of seams that truthfully is so minor I could have just used the scissors and trimmed it, but I never attempt repairs on my items and I am always forthright and report the most minor issues.
