Rare antique French Faience Inkwell, inscribed St. Anderes Abby, 1800. A beautiful antique inkwell complete with inkpot and sander. Rectangular shape with well in front portion. Four holes in center of top for quills. Decorated in vivid polychrome colors with floral motifs on all four sides, top and back of the well section. Colors are green, yellow and a rusty red. Inscribed under the glaze, St Anderes Abby, 1800. I am not certain of the spelling of Anderes; that is what it appears to me to read. Six raised "buttons" on the corners decorated in yellow. This inkwell was purchased in Paris about 50 years ago by the person I got it from. I have taken as many pictures as possible to show all aspects of it. The bottom is unglazed terracotta. T is a portion of the bottom chipped out, apparently some time ago. T is also a hard to read long word in script on the bottom that does not photograph easily. The sander appears to be of a different color clay from the inkwell and the inkpot. I am assuming that, while it is certainly old, the sander may be a slightly later or later replacement. The green under the glaze on the sander is, however, the same or extremely similar to the rest of the inkwell. Inkwell measures 7-3/4" long, 5" deep, approximately 2-1/2" high. Various chipping and t as shown in the pictures. No cracks or apparent repairs. A beautiful and I think, rare item. All questions answered promptly and honestly. Insurance required for all buyers. Insurance commensurate with the selling price.
