Monks at Well Extremely Rare Antique Ivory Japanese Carving $1 No Reserve! You are bidding on a Superb and Extremely Rare Japanese Ivory Carving. The piece was purchased at an extremely important multi-million dollar antique auction. This piece was important enough to be pictured in the auction literature. The carving depicts three monks and a child at a well. The detail is absolutely stunning! The piece is fully signed by the master artist. The piece is a figural group much larger and much more rare than a netsuke but I felt this was the best category to list the piece. I do not know the exact age of the piece. I am hopeful that someone can read the signature and perhaps figure out maker/age. I will not pretend to be an expert, but to my eye the piece looks extremely old. I would guess age at early to mid 1800's perhaps much older. As with any piece of very old Ivory, it shows age many lines and patination/natural staining. Piece also shows some overall grime as I have not attempted to clean it. The piece does have two old repairs (see photos) and if you look very carefully you can see a tiny separation in the flowing water. I am sure these could be expertly repaired if you wish. These issues do not detract from the overall beauty of the piece. The grouping is a solid piece and stands about 4 inches tall by 3 1/2 inches long by 2 inches deep. I could not capture the unbelieveable detail in the carving, please know it is even more stunning in real life. Can you imagine the skill it takes to carve flowing water...even the robes of each monk have tiny carved patterns. If this were not enough, when you flip the piece on its bottom, you can see the bottom of their feet, shoes and the basket!! SIMPLY SUPERB! I realize these pieces are extremely valuable, but I trust my bidders to settle on a fair price. Thus...$1 with absolutely NO RESERVE! GOOD LUCK!
