RARE 19th Century Antique Japanese Hirado porcelain ( Koro / Kogo) or covered box / dish. This box has been authenticated and appraised by the world's leading authority on Japanese Hirado-- Mr. Louis Lawrence. Mr Lawrence wrote the landmark work on Hirado porcelain titled " Hirado: Prince of Porcelains" Hirado is known for its unbelieveable quality which is comparable to that of the Japanese Porcelain Company Fukagawa. Part of what makes Hirado special is the porcelain and glaze. The make-up of the high quality porcelian and spectacular glaze gives Hirado pieces an unmistakeable creamy look and feel with a blue glaze tint while allowing sharp features for modeling with great detail such as is the case with this box. 5 years ago Mr Lawrence appraised this box as having been from around 1860 with a auction value of $850 and a retail value of $1600. I will not place a reserve on this because, to me, an appraisal is only a guide and auctions determine actual value. I only include the information about the appraisal for further authentication and the assurance of bidders. Some of the notes Mr. Lawrence mentioned were that this box was of "good medium size" for these and that they are "very hard to find in the current collecting climate" T are a few tiny hard to find nicks which he noted "was very common on Hirado porcelain because of how thinly it could be modeled and did not have a substantial effect on value because of the uncommon form." The piece is of good weight and thickness and has vibrant colors. The painting is bright and the shine of the rich glaze is breathtaking. The underglaze blue is lush and stunning. The box measures 4.5 inches wide 4.25 inches long and 3.5 inches tall. Typical Hirado unglazed base. I gaurentee the authenticity of the/is piece. Look at my 100% feedback and feel comfortable bidding. If you are the winner and wish to have my copy of Mr. Lawrence's book "Hirado: Prince of Porcelains" I will sell you one of my copies at the conclusion of the auction for an additional $15.00. It is slightly used but still in very good condition. Please feel free to email me with any questions. I am also willing to listed to Buy it Now offers if you need it quickly for Christmas but can not entertain these once t is a bid. Please check out my other auctions which include some Chinese Export Silver items by makers Wang Hing, Siu Kee, Tu Tian Xing, and Wing Nam. I also have a marvelous large Famille Rose Mandarin tureen for sale as well. Good Luck!
