Every once in a while, the true collector comes across an item on Ebay that he or she would never have had the opportunity to purchase otherwise. This is one such example. we have the finest example of the fabulous Pittler universal milling and turning lathe that I have ever seen. It is a very early version of the more robust 5 inch center height, back geared model C3. It is serial number 403 and virtually all components were hand fitted and carry matching serial numbers. It retains its original flywheel and foot treadle drive. The overhead countershaft and pulley system were apparently suspended from pipes with flanges fastened to the ceiling in a previous installation and I have these components, but they are unassembled. This type of lathe was the invention of Wilhelm von Pittler, a mechanical genius who held over 200 patents by the time of his death in 1910. These lathes are known for their incredible versatility as well as their rigidity and quality of construction. Two key features were the totally protected central lead screw and the trapezoidal bed with a saddle with circular bearing surface that allowed all attachments including the slide rest to be rotated at any angle around it. This particular example is in superb overall condition with the original trapezoidal bed looking almost unused. It retains about 90% of the original paint as well. The lathe comes with multiple original attachments, including slide rest, swiveling milling attachment with draw bar and two 15mm collet arbors, milling head which takes standard 8mm watchmaker's collets with draw bar, dividing spindle with both single and 5 start worms. It also has the extremely rare automatic spherical turning attachment with adjustable automatic stop, power cross feed attachment with automatic stop, power longitudinal feed with automatic stop, plain T-rest, steady rest, and follower rest. The lathe has a 4&1/2 inch 3 jaw chuck, 3 inch Burnerd 3 jaw chuck with both sets of jaws, 8 inch 4 jaw chuck, drive plate, tap holding chick, and watchmaker's type baloon chuck. The lathe also comes with gears which enable screw cutting of literally dozens of different thread pitches, as well as generation of a wide variety of spirals. The following link has additional information on this magnificent machine: http://www./pittler/index.html Instead of the standard set of 17 gears, this lathe comes with 22, mostly for use with the single start worm, but some of which are specifically for use with the 5 start worm, (both also included). The gears are in super shape except for one which is missing a single tooth (easily repaired). Finally, t is an elevating vertical slide type milling attachment with 3 T-slots, that is apparently not original to the machine, but likely added by a previous owner. In addition, the following items are not pictured: T are a set of hook and pin spanner wrenches, as well as standard wrenches which came in the original single drawer tool tray. T are also two apparently custom made adapters that will allow the holding of 15mm and 8mm collets in the headstock. T are multiple additional small parts including all necessary chuck keys, etc. If you are a collector of rare and unique early lathes, or would like an ideal companion lathe for ornamental turning, and is capable of ornamental turning work on its own!! I have many additional photos which I can email for those seriously interested. I can honestly say that this is the most painful sale of a machine that I have ever made, but it must go. I doubt you will ever see a nicer example!! Shipping of the lathe within about 400 miles of the New York - Philadelphia area may be arranged for a nominal charge. Alternately, the item may be picked up in person. Should the winning bidder require long distance shipping, t will be a $250.00 skidding and crating fee, and the buyer is responsible for actual additional shipping cost.
