Up for auction is THE FIRST self-retracting pocket tape measure ever invented. This is a rear piece, from 1922 made by the Farrand Rapid Rule company of New Hampsire. The first self retracting rule was made by Starrett in 1955.

The Farrand Rapid Rule, consists of a convex flexible metal ruller that is coiled inside the case. When the two side levers are pushed in the tape shoots out. It must be manual pushed back in. this piece has some shelf ware and some minor aging to the tape, as you can see in the photos (they are extreemly magnified and the item actually looks better in real life. It measures 2 3/4" long and 1" tall. It is fully marked with date and manufacturing information and is in perfect working condition. This is a must have for the rare antique tool collector.
