This is an extremely rare antique Victorian cameo depicting an important male. It is carved of lava with nice, higher relief and incredible details! Note the sensitivity given to the shape of the cheek. This handsome piece features a regal man in shirt and draped robe, left-facing, with flowing beard. In his hair is a laurel wreath, reminiscent of Ceasar, but the beard suggests a different Roman character, perhaps Antoninus Pius or Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus or Septimius Severus. The philosopher's style of beard could also suggest a portrait of one of the ancient Greek poets or philosphers; Homer, Aristotle, Socrates, etc. The laurel wreath depicts one who has triumphed. The detail and craftmanship exhibited in this cameo is exquisite! It is set in what appears to be a white gold frame, given the weight and richness of metal, but could also be silver. It has a hinged pinstem that closes with a simple c clasp. The cameo of the male is in Excellent condition! I see a scratch and two tiny nicks to the background only. Overall, very good, very nice shape. And very rare!! Measures 1 1/4" x 1 1/8" and is 7/16" in depth. A marvelous addition to your collection!
