~Auction Description~ This is a pair of Original and Authentic 1922 Bookends from a short-lived foundry that, sadly, was taken under with the onset of the Great Depression in the early 1930's. This pair was made by the Spencer Company, and examples of their beautiful pieces are becoming harder and harder to find these days. Seville and other once-renowned companies have begun to fade into the fog we call history. This lovely pair of bookends is one of the company's better designs, depicting a classic thoroughbred horse and a jockey rider. The pair is quite detailed, yet it has a minimalist, comic book-like quality about it, with the design seemingly in one long, raised-relief plain. The horse is depicted speedily galloping alongside a fence, as though it were racing in the Kentucky Derby. The jockey sits with his feet in the stirrups and his hands on the reigns, guiding his steed to victory. Now, I'm not sure if these were originally intended to be Bookends or Doorstops. The reason I question this is because, for this company, these are rather large pieces, ranking amongst the top 5 in size for this subject matter. Either way, they serve the purpose very well, having enough heft and weight to hold a door or a row of books.
