A uction D escription It is my pleasure, once again, to offer another superb pair of extremely rare and highly sought after bookends that are seen only once in a blue moon. The pair I am about to describe was made by only one company, and one alone. This was Galvano Bronze, which was founded by Paul Mori & Sons. This 1925 pair is one of their grandest and most monumental sets and is also one of their rarest. One will find that these stunning pieces were made using the same method used by only a few Art Deco foundries wby an elaborate mold was hung in solution while the metal was allowed to form over it. This metal generally was bronze or copper, but t were some exclusive pieces that had gold or silver, which were truly one of a kind. While in solution, the bookends hung on metal wicks, small remnants of which can still be seen on the undersides. This pair depicts the famous carved stone statue that resides in Giza, Egypt, and, coincidentally, it was made the same year that the entirety of the colossal monument was fully unearthed. The Great Sphinx of Giza is one of the world's most well-known and important ancient monuments. To our knowledge, it was and is the largest sculpture ever made in the round from stone. It is also probably the oldest colossal sculpture on Earth and is certainly the oldest such sculpture still in existence. The word "sphinx," which means "strangler," was first used by the Greeks to describe a fabulous, mythical creature that had the head of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of a bird. In Egypt, t are numerous representations of the sphinx, usually with the head of a pharoah wearing his headdress and the body of a lion. You will find this pair to be in amazing condition with a very sensual, full-length nude draped across the mammoth chimera's back. This lovely dame sits with her back arched and her head resting upon her folded arms, taking in the rays of the hot, desert sun. One foot rests on the tips of her toes and the other is tucked behind one knee. Very elegant and carefree! Both bookends are high quality, first rate pieces, with a deep, dark-toned bronze body that is highlighted with golden gleams and long, smooth contours. You will find these to be in near perfect condition. The only fault to mention is either a slight buckling of the metal on one buttock on one of the pieces or an old discreet repair. This is barely noticeable, as it occurs in the recess between the lady's backside and the Sphinx's headdress. Other than that, t are no chips, cracks, breaks, or repairs. Just beautiful Art Deco artistry and design at its best! These impressive Egyptian Revival pieces measure 7 ¾" Long, 2 ¼" Wide, and just under 7" Tall, and the pair weighs 7 pounds. I doubt that these will be seen again for some time, so now is your chance to acquire these fine pieces. This pair is just absolutely magnificent and brilliant! A rare treat!
