A uction D escription Now, this is a scarce Jennings Brothers pair of Bookends from the year 1924. They are entitled "Lady of the Theatre" and are very much Art Nouveau in style with their curvilinear designs and plant-inspired motifs . Both are quite elaborate and feature a bare chested maiden with hair pulled back and arms outstretched, holding the famous masks of both Comedy and Tragedy. By now, it should be well-known that Jennings produced a series of Bookends that are all quite desirable, and this pair is one of their most rare and highly valued. You will find the artistry in this pair to be simply amazing! The pieces are quite enchanting, with a style that encompasses elements of architecture, history, myth, legend and art. The lovely "guardian angel" of the theatre stands stoically behind a large crest-like shield and bears large featd wings. As stated above, she holds the dualistic Greek masks in her hands. On either side of the shield, green leaves and red berries crawl up toward the masks, and more leaves flow out across the base. Just lovely, excellent pieces! Never before have I seen these with rich polychrome handpainted colors. I have seen them in a bronze finish, a silverplated finish, and a monochrome golden bronze, but never with such lively, vivid colors! The handpainted pieces possess leaves in varying shades of green and an oval shield center that is finished in a deep blood ruby red. These colors compliment the golden bodies quite nicely, and the overall impact continues to draw my eyes to these beauties above all the others. You will find these exquisite bookends to both be in very good condition. The edges are nice and straight, the finish is intact and smooth with some common darkening, and the facial details are all crisp and well-defined. Each Greek-inspired piece stands impressively at 7" Tall, over 4 ½" Wide, and over 3" Deep, and weighs 3 lbs. Each Lady of the Theatre is marked "JB 1529," and both retain their original felted bottoms. Do not let these original and rare Jennings Brothers pieces pass you by! They would make a great addition to any bookend collection. Take a look at the actual photos below to see what is being offered. These could be ideal for the Collector and Bookend Enthusiast.
