we have a very nice and rare box of Holtzapffel slide rest cutting tools. The box containing these cutters was purpose - made by a craftsman for holding a large variety of cutters. It appears to be made of birch, and has splined corners and brass hinges with a mahogany insert. Slots for 228 cutters were also beautifully cut. The box measures 11 & 7/8" wide by 8 & 3/4" deep by 5" high. I am certain the box is at least 50 years old, and would guess that it is closer to 100. The box currently contains over 135 slide rest cutting tools of the standard 11/32" by 5/32" size. T are a number of different shapes, but the most interesting are the 4 ring cutting tools, the 12 straight thread chasing tools, and the 10 side thread chasing tools. Most of the tools carry the Holtzapffel numbers stamped in them. T are also a number of tools that have been modified for specific angles or purposes. More than half the tools are sharp, but the remainder will require sharpening prior to use. T is also a fantastic handle made of very dark rosewood that allows the slide rest tools to be held for hand turning. This is unmarked but appears to be Holtz or Evans. It measures 7 " long without a bit. If you are a wood turner or ornamental turner, these tools and the super nice box would make an excellent addition to your shop. Another great holiday gift for yourself or thet special turner in your life.
