FINE AND RARE c1840 BAILEY & KITCHEN COIN SILVER MASTER SALT; GADROONED TRIM; LAVISH ACANTHUS AND VINE CAP TREFOIL FEET; ORIGINAL GOLD WASH INTERIOR; NEVER MONOGRAMMED; RARELY SEEN "BAILEY & KITCHEN" MARK; SHOWN WITH SUPERB COLLECTION OF 19TH CENTURY SALTS, REMAINDER LISTED SHORTLY
This is an exceptionally rare, c1840 American coin silver master salt. The salt bears the mark of the renowned Philadelphia firm of Bailey & Kitchen. This mark was only used from 1832-1848. Later the firm became Bailey, Banks & Biddle, continuing to this day. Beautifully executed in circular, cauldron form. Rich, angle gadrooned trim. Smooth finish. Interior retains portion of original gold wash. Breathtaking, acanthus and wavy vine cap trefoil feet. Rising acanthus to centre. Masterfully hand chased and deep cut engraved. Never monogrammed. Master salt is 3 1/2 inches diameter, 2 inches tall, 3 1/4 ounces. Excellent condition, near pristine. Warm, lustreous sterling patina throughout. The hand chased finish work retains its original crisp detail. Hallmarked as shown, to inner leg. Coming soon, an exceptional, c1900 Chinese tea and coffee set, with matching tray, Slavic decoration.
