Zentmayer style precision compound microscope signed Betz Chicago, circa 1900.
Construction is of lacquered brass mounted on a Japanned black cast iron horseshoe base. The microscope stands approximately 15 inches high in the extended mode, and the main body tube is mounted atop a four inch brass pillar via a compass joint which allows the complete optical assembly to tilt, over a range of 90 degrees. T is an inner sliding body tube extender which increases the body length by up to 3 inches. A removable sub-stage condenser has an adjustable diaphragm opening ( 20 mm max.) The objectives are engraved 2/3 and 1/6 and both are signed by Betz. The circular specimen stage is also engraved " Betz Special , Chicago, Illinois " Many of the Betz microscope components were apparently manufactured by the Gundlach Manhattan Optical Company and some of the Betz microscopes were delivered with Zeiss lenses. All mechanical functions operate smoothly including the coarse and fine focus controls and also the gimbaled mirror swivel arm. The optics are bright and clear and produce sharp images of the slides (included in the accessory box) The plano-concave mirror silvering has minor spotting but is perfectly usable. General cosmetic condition is very good with only slight lacquer blemishes. The instrument is complete with the original attractive hardwood carrying case. Microscope is sold as is without reserve. Case dimensions (inches) 12 High X 7 Wide X 4 Deep. Weight is 8#. Rare and historically important instrument in nice condition, which is bound to appreciate in value. Careful packing, shipping and insurance will be $48 for inland USA. Cannot ship outside USA, Sorry. Please email me if you have questions. Thanks.
