EXCELLENT CONDITION CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S MOTHER NUMBERED SCOVILL 1/9TH PLATE RARE BLACK FLORAL UNION CASE UNBLEMISHED TINTYPE This Scovill union case was purchased by my father in 1986 from an antiques dealer in Arkansas. The gentleman selling this was the descendant of the woman in the tintype. Her name was Henrietta Glance, her grandson James Glance carried this in the Civil War. I know my father found this particular case in a collectors guide at the Houston Public Library but he did not document the details of the resource he used. I've included photographs to show every possible angle of this amazing union case & tintype. I also removed the tintype for THE FIRST TIME EVER!!! The paper backing looks like it is brand new as does the tintype of Henrietta. The number 125 is hand written on the paper backing, very interesting feature. The velvet insert is a lovely shade of red and shows no fading at all, it as well looks brand new. The velvet trim around the tintype does show very minor wear in the form of fading and a couple of tiny spots w the velvet has been slightly rubbed away. The gilt edging around the tintype is FLAWLESS! It is just gorgeous. I cannot see even one tiny age spot or fading on the tintype itself, not even around the edges. The union case is so close to absolute perfection that the one nick it does have makes me nuts! It is on the front side bottom left, a tiny portion of the corner design has been chipped off. Easy to identify the chip when you know w to look, please see photos. Considering the incredibly ornate raised design on this case, I'm amazed that's the only flaw. In every other way, this union case is perfect. The hinges are still shiny, the case snaps shut with a loud click and t are no chips, scratches or wear/rub marks at all except for the above noted. The floral design is beautiful, highly detailed and really lovely. One of the prettiest of it's type I can recall taking a look at. My father loved beautiful little items such as this one and loved the history of the item most of all. I'm not an antiques dealer but I did inherit my father's love for old family treasures and as such wanted this auction to be as accurate as possible. I am very sure this is a tintype, it attracted a magnet. I did include a photo of the back of the tintype when I removed it from the case to document it's condition. If t are any details that seem erroneous, please let me know. I've tried to educate myself on this item at least to the extent that I can factually represent it's salient features. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, I'll be happy to provide additional information or photographs.
