This is the best set of Blackforest carved walnut bookends I have ever seen. they are guaranteed all original, genuine and old, and to your personal satisfaction. They are also very large, measuring10 inches long by 7 inches high by 4 inches wide and weighing 6 pounds the pair. They are probably from the late 1880's through about 1920 and definitely European in origin. Probably German although they could be Swiss or Austrian. They are in wonderful condition, just about perfect, nothing broken or chipped or cracked and finish is great, all original antique patina. Deep dark, and glowing hand rubbed black walnut finish. Green felts on bases and backs. Each bookend is different and each hand carved. One shows a bear coming out of a cave with another bear coming toward it. A handpainted silvery gold stream runs out of the cave and through the bookend. The other bokoend shows a bear coming out of a cave and a small dog, terrier or affenpinscher, looking at the bear. The dog sits on a handpainted green base. The dog itself is painted with a white chest, red collar and littel orange red eyes.. One ear is up and the other half down, comical and quizzical. At first I thought it was a hunting dog but look closely and you will see it wears a big red bow on it's collar!! I dont' think that is a hunting dog but a dog who has never before seen
