Child's Blue Transferware Waste Bowl SPORTING ANIMALS StaffordshireEnglandc. 1850 This is a spectacular miniature transferware waste bowl, circa 1850. It was originally part of a complete children's tea service, somewhat crudely made and decorated in multi-colors with wonderful wild sporting animals from Africa and India. The bowl stands about 2 1/2" tall and measures 4 1/8" across the top rim, made of a creamy earthenware, transfer printed in bright sky blue. The bowl features 2 wonderful, detailed transfers, depicting a Royal Tiger and a Black Panther. The source prints are recognizable from the copperplate engravings of Buffon and other early natural scientists. (Other pieces in the set depict an Aard Wolf, Common Fox, Black Bear, Antelope, Beaver, goat, Koo-Doo and Leopard.) The piece is unmarked. It most certainly was made in the Staffordshire region of England c. 1850. The pattern name and maker is unknown. A set with this pattern is illustrated on page 78 Lorraine Punchard's "Playtime Pottery and Porcelain from the United Kingdom & United States". The bowl is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. T are stilt marks, original to the making. Light overall crazing consistent with age.
