For sale we have a Bow Drill marked "Thewlisa & Griffin, Warrington, C & M, 1889" which I believe was an English firm. One the otherside it has "W 7". It is 33" overal length, beech handle on the bow is sturdy and no chips or cracks. The drill portion appears to be a much older style, 15 3/4" long made of iron and oak & primitive looking bit that looks more like an awl. The hardwood pad replacement is one I made for it. They used breast plates also for putting extra pressure on the work. Bow drills were used since ancient times for drilling small holes in wood, metal and stone. They were used in piano making, clock making, by cutlers, lettering on stone, etc. The wing screw tightens the ratchet to put tension on the bow. Feel free to ask questions. Oh yeah, still works! Please check out my other auctions for more antique tools and unusual items. I'm selling off a 20+ year collection of antique tools among other wierd and unusual things. Thanks fer lookin'! International Bidders: All International bidders must have a feedback of 50 or better & I reserve the right to cancel bids if I feel the risk is too high. This is because Paypal does not protect me from chargebacks if I send to a foreign country. Thanks Paypal. I always try to keep shipping down & will combine shipping to save you money whenever possible. Insurance is required for all international bidders & My Lord, this all sounded so easy in the brochure...
