Child's Brown TransferwareMiniature Cup and Saucer GOAT John and Robert Godwin ~ Staffordshire England c. 1835 This is spectacular toy transferware cup and saucer set, circa 1835. The pair was originally part of an early miniature children's tea service. The shapely cup stands 2 1/8" tall on a raised pedestal base, with an applied loop handle. The saucer measures 4 3/4" in diameter. It is transfer printed in a rich chocolate brown with pearlware glaze. It is decorated in the scarce GOAT pattern, depicting a girl kneeling beside her pet goat, with a bucket beside her and a Chalet-style farmhouse in the background. The inner border is decorated with cartouches of horses, cows and sheep. The cup is decorated inside and out, with very little white space. The set is unmarked. The pattern is commonly attributed to John and Robert Godwin, an early 19th century pottery manufactory in the Staffordshire region of England . The set is in great condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs. A tiny spider can be seen in the glaze on the bottom of the cup. T is a minor transfer wrinkle on the cup, and stilt marks, all original to the making and mentioned just to be picky.
