Rare Early Staffordshire Child's Miniature Toy Pie Dish JAPONICA John Ridgway Staffordshire England c.1840 This is stunning and scarce child's toy plate, c. 1840. Originally part of a complete children's toy transferware dinner service, the tiny plate measures just under 3 3/4" in diameter, with a scalloped rim, transfer printed in a rich chocolate brown with a pearlware glaze. It is the exact size and form of a cup plate and could have been made as an interchangable piece. It is impeccably detailed, depicting a pattern that is more commonly found in adult wares and only rarely found in miniature children's wares. The central image is a Chinoiserie or blue willow influenced image with two figures in a teahouse and a sailboat approaching on the shore. The border is decorated with six floral sprays. The pattern name is Japonica . This diminutive plate is unmarked. Petra Williams, in Volume 3 of her book Staffordshire Romantic Transferware Patterns, illustrates a marked example of the plate, bearing the backstamp of John Ridgway, a pottery maker in the Staffordshire district of England from 1830-55. The quality of the form and detailing of the image is far superior to what would be expected on this diminutive sized piece. The plate is in fairly good condition, with two small back chips and no other chips, stains or repairs. It displays perfectly from the front. The piece is offered as is, an exciting addition to any collection of children's wares or miniature doll house historical transferware. For those of you who collect partial and complete miniature dinner sets, we have a large set of this pattern that we would be delighted to make available for sale as a set, upon request. We have listed a whimsical variety of early Staffordshire transferware and children's wares this week, and are happy to combined shipping of multiple purchases.
