is another listing from a wonderful selection of items I have had stored in California, from a life of collecting and all never before listed on Ebay...after years of selling in high end antiques stores, and being a passionate collecter myself, I have accumulated a rather unique amount of desirable pieces. Everything I will be listing is fresh from my collection so please stop back often, or email with any special requests....... I know that if I do not list this quickly, I will have a hard time parting with it......Ilike so many of you, I love collecting, and it is always difficult to part with things worth having.......wishing I could keep everything ........ I never sell anything I don't treasure myself....... ......this auction features the most spectacular and unusual original antique Barbola item dating to the early 1900's I have ever found.......I actually started collecting ENGLISH Barbola work about twenty years ago....I have never found another of these, or anything quite like it....the soft pastel roses are all original, and are all specifically made from Barbola Paste......this is a hand sculpted tray, and was not a factory piece.......not only are t incredibly beautiful roses throughout the tray, the top tier of this tray is made of a barbola frame.....it has somewhat pie crust look, but is much more elegantly detailed. ...you can see this close up in my photos below......t is a spot or two of barbola missing from age, but this is truely minimal as you can see from the photos but in no way doe it detract from the piece or diminish its collectable value......everything down to the wavey glass and the old "blue birds" chintz fabric underneath both the top and bottom tray is original........Incredible, museum like quality..........a rare opportunity to add a most unusual and desirable piece of ENGLISH Barbola work to your collection...without a doubt this is a "book piece"...... I am trying to describe details so that when you view the many pictures I am including, you are sure to look for these highlights..... I have had many questions about Barbola work so I thought I would post this in this auction: The flowers are made of a composition paste which was made by art material manufacturers in the UK such as Windsor and Newton in England, Ireland and Scotland at about 1900 through about 1930's. The paste was hand molded or sculpted into flowers, ribbons, leaves and related ornament and added to objects to make them beautiful, mostly mirror frames, and decorative boxes..but also basketry, furniture, candlesticks, etc. This craft was simular to decorative work in other parts of Europe such as France and Italy which was created in Gesso, however barbola work did have it's own identity, and was centered in the UK as a craft. Barbola paste was also used to hand decorate basketry items in the USA and some fine USA furniture manufactures also developed a version of decorating home furnishings with simular Gesso floral ornament during this same period.
