I am thrilled to offer for auction this true rarity of the elegant glass era: a red footed comport or candy dish in the gorgeous etched pattern known as "Portia," made by Cambridge Glass Co. from the 1930s-1950s. Cambridge called the color of this piece "Carmen," and the Portia etching is encrusted with gold. Pieces in the Carmen color with gold etching are very hard to come by, and several of them are listed in Gene Florence's Treasures of Very Rare Depression Glass , valued at several hundred dollars each. But the sheer beauty of this piece truly speaks for itself! It measures 6 1/2" tall with the lid on, and 7 1/4" across at the widest point. The dish has four claw feet with gold highlights and a gold scalloped edge with two molded handles; the lid has a gold finial with the same molded pattern as the two handles. The Portia etching itself repeats on four panels around both the lid and the dish. The only apology for this piece is that t is some wear to the gold decoration in the most common areas; on the finial, on the two handles and around the edge of the dish. This is of course typical for these areas since they were the most handled. T is no wear that I can find to the Portia etchings, and best of all, no damage at all to the glass itself....no chips, cracks or nicks anyw This piece was obviously well cared-for, and it is waiting to move on to the next Cambridge collector who will give it a place of pride in his or her home! Thanks for looking and please feel free to email with any questions!
