Lousy photographer - incredible creamer and covered sugar bowl set! These are early Meriden Brittania Co. Silverplate pieces - very rare and coveted by collectors. This auction is for both items together as a set. The Meriden Brittania Company became part of International Silver at the turn of the century when many silver manufacturers were joining forces to build strength in the industry. You can occasionally find these charter oak pieces items marked International Silver, but I have never seen them with the original Meriden marks as these have. These items feature amazing figurative detail with oak leaves and acorns and bark patterns on base, bowl, and handles. These are marked Meriden Brit'a Company 5100. They are in really nice condition, especially considering their age. They still have a heavy coating of silver and are in lovely, table-top condition. As I look at them closely, I can see a few minor imperfections - mainly a very few tiny dark spots that I imagine a professional silversmith could polish out. You'd have to be looking closely for them to see them as they are now. Knowing that most collectors don't appreciate having the patina on items like these disturbed, I have not cleaned them, only wiped them with a polishing cloth to bring out the amazing detail. Of course, you can polish them yourself, but I always recommend a visit to a silversmith for heavy cleaning. These pieces don't need that yet, though - they're super just as is. Sorry for the terrible photographs - I'm just THAT bad! The photos are intended to show the incredible detail of these items. If you look carefully, in one of the pictures you can see my reflection, plus that of my two big helpers, my 4 year old daughter and our Collie. How tacky is that??? Let me mention that these are heavy, huge pieces. The creamer would easily hold over a pint of cream, and the sugar bowl would hold at least two cups and probably more. The sugar bowl measures over 8 inches from handle to handle, and it stands over seven inches tall. The creamer is right at 6 inches tall at it's highest point on the handle, and about 5 3/4 inches from spout to outside edge of the handle. To put it in perspective, a standard stoneware coffee mug is about 4 inches tall. These are truly show stoppers - I've always gotten a lot of comments about how remarkable they are when I've had them out for entertaining. I purchased these in a high end antique shop years ago, and I saw a newer International Silver version (same pattern) on a popular silver pattern replacement site just today. They were asking $499 apiece! Normally I wouldn't dream of parting with them except we're downsizing and "de-collecting" to fit our new space. I have several cool sterling and silverplate items from my personal collection going up in the next few days, so check them out if you get the chance! Of course I'm happy to answer any and all questions, so please ask away. I'm no expert on collectible silver, but I know enough to be dangerous, as they say, and I'll answer all questions as accurately as I can! Good luck bidding!
