This "RARE" Circa 1870 - 1890 "Fourth Order" Lighthouse Lamp is in Excellent Condition except for a few small blemishes, picture (4) a tiny ping the size of a pinehole, picture (8) a slight wrinkle on the lip, picture (10) the center cap does have some dings. This heavy brass lamp shows great age with lots of patina and the quality and detail of this piece is exquisite. 9" tall, base 7 1/4" in diameter. Lamps that provided the beacon of light for lighthouses ranged from very large and sophisticated machines to small lamps that collectors today associate with oil lamps of the time period. I believe "Lighthouse Lamps" were made by the Light House Service, exceptions were Belgian and Aladdin lamps. Early lighthouse lamps burned sperm oil, colza oil, and lard oil, later ones used acetylene or kerosene. Lard oil was primarily burned in the large fourth order lamps and kerosene on the smaller lamps. In the 1870's lighthouse lamps were devised with three, four, or more concentric wicks to increase illumination, Henry Harrison Doty of Norfolk, Virginia and Joseph Funck of Tomkinsville, New York held several patents for multiple wick burners. Funck later improved lamps that became standard in Fourth Order lighthouses. By 1892 kerosene was the universal oil used in virtually all lighthouses. Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Orders marked prominent points and shoals in large bays and warned of obstructions, piers, and wharves. Likewise, lamps were designed as sizes third, fourth, fifth Order, etc. Virtually all lighthouse lamps were custom made. The smaller center-draft lamps were dependable, practical and produced bright light. Only few Mantle lamps such as the Aladdin kerosene lamps were used in some lighthouses.
