This stunning rich blue little "box" hangs on original knotted mahogony-colored cord and makes a dramatic necklace! I wore with monochromatic outfits (such as all brown; black; cream; gray), and makes an elegant statement! I have been told antique box is for carrying poison; snuff; hair. The inside of the snug-fitting lid and the box is a rich lilac blue. Both sides are beautifully rendered down to the curved bottom. Cloisonne is enameling in which thin wire (gold in this case) which has been gilded is bent to form cells (cloisons), then filled with enamel. Each color is in a separate compartment, each compartment is separated by thin wire. As you can see, this is a complex process, and t are great artisans and not so great, which is why these older pieces are sought (their intricate craftsmanship). The gold on this box has a beautiful sheen which is due to age. The metal beneath the lid shows a hint of copper, so my guess is that the metal is copper which is coated in gold. Handknotted Cord and tassles are in great condition. Necklace is strong and should last another 100 years. Box is in VERY GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION ~ I can see (with naked eye) no flaws whatsoever. The colors are vibrant, full of life. Necklace measures 21" long (excluding tassels). Box measures approx. 3" wide x approx. 2-1/4" long. Probably dates to mid to late 1800s.
