This is a rare set of wild west cowboy bookends. we have the mustang or bronco horse rider, maybe at a rodeo, in full cowboy regalia including chaps, spurs, cowboy shirt, bandana and stetson hat, riding a plunging nose to the ground horse. Look at this action scene closely. The horse's nose is almost to the ground, the rider is arched as far back as he can go, has already lost his stetson hat, has one hand fanned out for balance behind him, with the horse's tail as high as his hand!!! The corral fence is behind them both. These measure 6 inches tall and weigh 4 pounds the pair. They have no damage and the finish is mostly intact with a great original patina. They are guaranteed old, genuine and original. These are art deco in style and origin and I would put them right around 1925. They are marked OFW on the bottom right side of the base. I have never had this set marked like these. They are rare anyways but this marking is new. Probably the initials of a very old foundry. Kuritzky shows this exact same casting but marked AC on page 325, Plate 2311 and calls them BRONCO RIDER. See "The Encyclopedia of Bookends". I have had that set maybe 4 or 5 times in the past 18 years but this is the first time I have ever had or seen this set. Thanks for looking. Please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible.
