For auction is a rhodium-plated CORO DUETTE in the form of two abstract, Art Deco swirls set with many white rhinestones in the best Art Deco style. In the center are two sets of three channel-set baguettes. The swirls are set with several sizes of white rounds. I have been holding on to this Duette for a couple of years, thinking I would have it restored but that is not going to happen in the foreseeable future so I've decided to let it go to someone else who return it to its original beauty. Many of rhinestone are missing, dirty, or dulled. However, the plating on the backside is in better condition; the pin back and dress clips are all tight and secure. This particular Duette is one I never see for sale on eBay or on internet retail sites so I feel justified in calling it rare. Its scarcity is another good reason to invest in its restoration. Each swirl can be separated from the pin frame and be worn as a dress clip. DUETTES , or detachable brooches, are probably the definitive CORO jewel. Two, and sometimes three clips could be removed from a frame and worn separately, or reattached to the frame, form one unified design, to be worn as a pin or brooch. Adolph Katz patented the design for Coro in 1947. I have included the drawing from the patent application also for your reference. Katz was not a designer, but as the manager of the Coro manufacturing facility he had a major say in what designs were produced for the major lines. In Collecting Costume Jewelry 101 , Julia C. Carroll writes: " The Coro company tramemarked a unique type of brooch called the Coro Duette. The Coro Duette consists of a mechanism patented by Coro in 1931, that locks two separate dress clips together. When into the mechanism, the two clips look like one large brooch. The clips can also be detached from the mechanism to be worn separately. . . Coro Duettes are highly collectible and prized by collectors today. Some of them are very elaborate, featuring trembling flowers or twin birds. Others are simple geometric designs. . . Later Duettes from the 1950s were often figural designs including owl Duettes, rabbit Duettes, and monkey Duettes. "The frame is signed CORO DUETTE in script The frame and clips are marked patent numbers referring to the design of the Duette mechanism not the style of the clips attached to the frame and appear on all authentic Duettes .The D uette measures 3 by 1.0 inches (7.6 by 2.5 cm). Coro was the largest manufacturer of costume jewelry in United States during the golden age of the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Many styles of Coro jewelry are avidly collected today.I will mail this pin to you, as soon as payment is confirmed, by first-class mail in a padded envelope.
