IMPORTANT PERIOD SHERATON SECRETARY DESK IN RARE FORM EXECUTED ON FINELY TURNED LEGS IN CROTCHED MAHOGANY- MASSACHUSETTS CIRCA 1790-1810 PRICE REDUCED! We are proud to present to you this period Sheraton " North Shore " Secretary desk in rare form and diminutive scale. This desk's origins are in one of the Massachusetts China trade port cities of the Massachusetts area known as the " North Shore ". It was (best educated guess) made in the towns (back then) of Peabody , Essex, Salem or Marblehead , Massachusetts . These pieces were crafted in the era for the families making their fortunes in the China Trade import business. This fine desk is completely executed in crotched mahogany veneer in its original finish. This desk sits on nicely turned legs, has a full framed detaching crown, a super nice door that pulls down to expose its full interior with vertical letter slots, drawers and a writing surface. The hardware was no doubt wooden knobs originally, but, they have been replaced a very long time ago with these very old matched Chippendale brass hardwares. This desk stands 59" tall, is 45" wide at the crown and is 20 ½" deep. This is an extremely unusual piece of correct important Sheraton period furniture. It came to us with some veneer missing but, fortunately we had some fine old veneer of the same gauge and color at our workshop. With the common exception of the hardware being changed out, this piece is 100% correct and as fine a specimen of New England early furniture as you can find. T are several other spots w small veneer hits were stained in and old putty was used to correct. The front corners of the desk's base top molding work has old pieces of wood affixed to them which, from what we can surmise, was someone in the family making a repair on their own. It's sort of charming to us. These are not big issues and this is a stunning desk, however, we do our very best to point out every detail that comes to our attention. We inspect every piece closely and we make certain any matter needing attention gets it before any piece leaves our shop. This piece rates as an important period piece and makes the cut in every department. Truly a rare find and a bargain worth many times our asking price! FURNITURE WOODS 101 : We get a lot of questions on whether or not the furniture we list is comprised of solid wood or veneered. We would like to take this opportunity to give our customers a brief explanation of the construction of antique furniture. Most specialty cuts of wood i.e., tiger maple, bird's eye maple, tiger oak (a.k.a. quarter sawn) crotched mahogany, Cuban mahogany, burled walnut, flame birch, flame cherry, etc., are applied to furniture via veneers. These choice cuts of woods are prohibitively expensive that they very rarely used these in solid wood form. However, t were exceptions to this. When we are fortunate to encounter one of these exceptions, we try to be clear in identifying the solid wood construction. In most cases, these woods are no longer available at any price. If our listing doesn't state that it is made of solid wood, then the furniture was made from a combination of veneers and solid secondary woods. We list the specialty woods in our listings first, as that is the most prominent feature. Please read descriptions carefully and look at all photos. Ask any questions that you may still have. Requests of additional photos are encouraged, as we are limited to the amount of space allocated for photos. We hope this clarifies for you some of the mystique involved with buying antique and vintage furniture.
