THIS IS A VERY RARE, VERY EARLY AND BEAUTIFULLY MADE, DOUBLE SIDED SIGN. THIS ONCE GRACED THE FRONT OF A TAILORS SHOP. THIS SIGN WOULD HAVE HUNG DIRECTLY OUT FROM THE FRONT OF THE SHOP AND COULD HAVE BEEN READ WHEN APPROACHING THE TAILOR SHOP FROM EITHER DIRECTION. WE BELIEVE THIS TO BE EARLY 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN, BUT MAY INDEED BE MUCH EARLIER. THE SIGN READS "TAILOR" DIAGONALLY ACCROSS THE CENTER ON EACH SIDE WITH THE WORDS "LADIES" AND "GENTS" ABOVE AND BENEATH IT. WE PURCHASED THIS FROM THE FAMILY THAT HAD INHERITED IT LONG, LONG AGO. WE HAVE HAD IT HANGING DURING OUR TIMES OF COTTAGE, MISSION AND EVEN MODERN DESIGN. WE LOVE GOOD DESIGN, WONDERFUL PATINA, AND UNUSUAL PIECES THIS IS ALL THREE! SADLY WE CAN NOT FIND ROOM FOR IT IN OUR SMALL RETIREMENT HOME. CONDITION: THE IRON SHEET WITH THE SILVERED LETTERS ON IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION, THE IRON SCROLLWORK AROUND THE SIGN IS ALSO IN GOOD CONDITION, AS IS THE MOUNTING BRACKET. THE LETTERING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SIGN SHOWS SOME WEAR AS WOULD BE EXPECTED, BUT IS STILL IN REMARKABLY COOD CONDITION CONSIDERING IT'S AGE AND IT'S HAVING BEEN EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. DIMENSIONS:WIDTH INCLUDING BRACKETS 39 1/2 INCHES, SIGN WIDTH ALONE 29 1/2 INCHES. IT IS 24 INCHES HIGH. THIS IS A WONDERFUL PIECE! AND ONE THAT YOU ARE NOT LIKELY TO FIND AGAIN.
