RARE EARLY 19 TH CENTURY TELESCOPE OR SPY GLASS - c1800 Signed BLEULER LONDON This is a nice example of a 6-Draw Brass and Ivory-Bound Telescope or Spy Glass signed BLEULER of LONDON . Late 18 th or early 19thC . Comes in a silk-covered and lined card case. Maximum diameter 1.7 inches. Length closed 1.3 inches and fully extended 3.2 inches. Objective has minor chips at the circumference, though this does not spoil the clear, erect image. The barrel is ivory-bound with some shrinkage. The draw tubes are in nice undamaged condition. John Bleuler (Born 1757, Died 1829) was an Optical, Mathematical and Philosophical Instrument Maker who worked from 27 Ludgate Street, London (1791- 1822 ). He was apprenticed to Henry Shuttleworth in 1771, and appears to have worked with him until 1791 when he took over the business of Mr Whitfield in Ludgate Street. NOTE Dudley Adams had a patent made on 7 th March 1815 that refers to a new system of allowing a collapsible eyepiece so that the telescope became much more compact. This is one such.
